Removing the Mapping Barrier to Scale Autonomous Logistics
High-definition maps played an essential role in the early development of autonomous driving. Built with centimetre-level detail, they gave vehicles advance information about lanes, intersections, traffic signals, road signs, and other fixed features.
That knowledge reduced the burden on onboard systems. Instead of interpreting every part of the road from the beginning, the vehicle could compare what it saw with a highly detailed digital model prepared in advance.
The approach worked, but it introduced a serious constraint.
Every new route required data collection, map production, testing, and validation. The maps then had to be maintained as roads changed. Construction work, temporary restrictions, and altered lane layouts could leave the digital record out of step with the real environment.
For an autonomous logistics industry preparing to expand across cities and continents, that process was too slow and too costly. A RoboVan entering a new logistics park or service area could require weeks of preparation before it carried its first load. Customers purchasing an autonomous vehicle might wait around a month before it was ready for everyday use.
From Light Maps to Map-Free Autonomy
Zelostech began removing that constraint in 2025 with the introduction of its light-map solution.Light maps retain only the road information needed for general guidance. The vehicle handles far more of the driving task through onboard perception and AI, reducing mapping costs and shortening deployment time to less than 15 days.
It was a meaningful improvement, but still an intermediate stage. Opening a new operating area continued to require road collection and map validation, followed by ongoing maintenance. True flexibility required the vehicle to function without a detailed map of the road prepared in advance.
Achieving that at Level 4 is significantly more difficult than introducing map-free features into a passenger car with driver assistance. In a Level 2 system, a person remains responsible for supervising the road and intervening when necessary. A Level 4 RoboVan must independently perceive its surroundings and complete the driving task within its operating area.
That demands more from every part of the system: perception, computing, engineering, decision-making, and the quality of the data used to train it.
In 2026, Zelostech completed the next step. Building on the light-map system, Zelostech developed a new generation of map-free L4 autonomous driving technology and became the first to bring it into large-scale production. The new system further reduces deployment costs while shortening the preparation period to less than one day. A vehicle can be delivered and placed into operation almost immediately.
