In August 2021, after losing his job in Silicon Valley, Zhuang Li—an early contributor to the Apollo open-source system—returned and founded Zelostech. Soon, technical experts from Waymo and top U.S. universities joined the mission to commercialize autonomous driving.

The company was born at an inflection point: capital was becoming rational, and commercialization had become the critical test for survival.

CEO Kong Qi, who also returned from Silicon Valley, embodies the sector’s journey. With a B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science and a Ph.D. from Purdue University, he previously served as head of planning/decision-making at a top Silicon Valley AV team and as Chief Scientist of Autonomous Driving at a leading e-commerce giant in North America. His experience gave him a deep understanding of the industry’s commercialization challenges.

The Apollo open-source platform provided a mature technical foundation for many AV companies. “Zelostech also built entirely independently on the Apollo platform,” said Kong Qi. “After much trial and error, Zhuang Li and the team chose to focus on the autonomous logistics vehicle niche.”

Guided by the strategic principle “low-speed over high-speed, cargo over passengers,” Zelostech bet that urban distribution logistics would be the first large-scale landing ground for AVs. Cargo transport demands lower tolerance thresholds than passenger services, making mid-to-low-speed freight scenarios more viable for early adoption.

“We shifted from pure algorithms and software to integrated hardware–software products. The key was whether someone would pay for it, whether it could create real value,” Kong said. “That’s why we believed logistics would be the first domain where technology and product could scale.”

Despite investor pressure to pivot, the team stuck to its judgment. By mid-2023, Zelostech launched its first true mass-production vehicle, the Z5, achieving a milestone in low-speed urban freight on public roads.

Within just four years, Zelostech has become a Global Unicorn, raising nearly $300 million in Series B funding in 2025, a rare success in the “autonomous driving winter.”

  • Vehicles already deliver flowers at Gardens by the Bay, with Changi Airport in talks, and clients in Austria and the Middle East.

On multi-scenario expansion, Zelostech is moving beyond logistics into security patrols and municipal services.

  • Example: With its enterprise partners, it launched a gas pipeline inspection system using PPB-level leak detection and L4 autonomy for 24/7 monitoring.
  • In June 2025, Zelostech upgraded its product line with E6 long-range, E6 MAX, E6 MAX long-range, and Z5 refrigerated trucks. The E6 MAX, with 7.4 m³ cargo space, boosts efficiency for e-commerce parcels, highlighting Zelostech’s customization and product-matrix strengths.

This dual-path strategy—globalization + scenario diversification—is creating positive feedback loops. By expanding markets, shaping international standards, and innovating locally adapted products, Zelostech is building both brand influence and cross-scenario expertise.
